TOWN HALL PUBLIC HEARING: FIRE/EMS

NEXT MONDAY, MAY 23, 2016 AT 7 PM

The Northfield Center Township Board of Trustees will conduct a Public Hearing NEXT MONDAY, May 23, 2016 at 7 pm in the Town Hall.  The purpose of the Hearing is to allow Northfield Center Township Residents to voice their comments on the various Fire/EMS coverage issues that are currently before the Board of Trustees.  The Trustees will make no decisions at this hearing.

PLANNED SEWER RATE INCREASES TO BE DISCUSSED AT PUBLIC MEETING THIS THURSDAY

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) will be holding a public meeting this Thursday, May 19th from 5 to 7PM at the Nordonia High School auditorium.  The purpose of the meeting is to share their future plans and how much you will be paying in sewer fees from 2017 to 2021.  The NEORSD has already announced that fees will be increasing but we don’t know what those figures are yet.  Remember, these are the same folks who tried to charge you for their storm water runoff fee (TAX).  I fought this tooth and nail and as a result, a judge ruled in our favor and Northfield Center residents do not have to pay this tax!  But what else do they have in mind? This is your chance to find out what is going on with NEORSD and what kind of plans they have for your wallets!

FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL RIDE

~ LARGE PROCESSION PASSING THROUGH NORTHFIELD CENTER ~

The 12th Annual Firefighters Memorial Ride (FFMR) will take place on Sunday, May 29, 2016.  The proposed route includes Northfield Center. The fully escorted ride, led by the CPD Motorcycle Unit, will begin at the Cleveland Firefighters Memorial next to First Energy Stadium at 11am and should reach Rubber City Harley Davidson in Cuyahoga Falls by 12:30pm.

The procession will be eastbound on Valley View Road.  At approximately 11:45AM, they will enter our Township when they turn South onto Olde Eight Road.  They will then proceed through our Township along the entire length of Olde Eight and finally enter into Boston Heights.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

The annual Memorial Day parade will be on Monday May 30th.  The parade will begin at 10AM from the St. Barnabas parking lot and will proceed North along Olde Eight Road to the Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery at Olde Eight and Valley View Road.

WARNING FROM A RESIDENT

Early yesterday afternoon (5/12), two men knocked on my door – both white, one tall, one short, wearing shirts with “Clear” something.  They were selling alternatives to Time Warner Cable.  I went outside to speak with them.  They asked to see a cable bill; without thinking, I went in the house to get one and they followed me in.  I was caught off guard but told them they should not have entered my house.  One replied that I had invited them in, which was wrong and I told them so.  He indicated it was “implied.”  I firmly said it was not.  They were hard to get rid of.  I did call the Sheriff’s non-emergency number, but I was rather shaken and did not tell them that these guys had entered my home uninvited.  By the time the deputy came through the complex, it appears they were gone.

I have no way of knowing if they were legitimate.  I did check the Northfield Center website for authorized venders.  Authorization for the vendors listed expired in 2014, making it impossible to determine if these men were not authorized or the website had not been updated.  Please distribute this warning so no one else is taken in.  Thanks.

PAUL’S NOTE:  We’ve received many reports of unauthorized solicitors throughout our township and the Sheriff’s Office has stopped a majority of them and advised them to obtain permits.  As of this date, there are NO solicitor permits issued in our township.  Please remember, ALL lawfully registered solicitors are required to show their Summit County permits to anyone asking to see them.  And PLEASE, never allow any strangers into your home.  To do otherwise is putting you and your family in potential danger!  Call the Sheriff’s Office to report any and all suspicious activities!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q >>> – I heard through my neighbors that you will be tearing down the house that has been in foreclosure for years in our neighborhood. This is great news to us. As the yard is hardly ever cut and there is a pool on the property that still has water in the bottom which causes a huge mosquito problem for us in the summer months. I have contacted the health department numerous times with nothing ever being done to it. I wanted to confirm that this is actually happening, because I have a few question and concerns.

A >>> – I checked on this rumor and that is all it is, a rumor.  There are no plans for the Township to demolish any homes.  To do so is a long and drawn out legal process as you might have seen with the Mather House where the family was murdered and the house blew up.  And the heirs actually wanted it demolished so you can imagine what we would be up against if the owner/bank did not want their property demolished!  Again, this is a false rumor.  I hope this answers your concern.

 ***************************************************

Q >>> – I heard that the fire department is still trying to unionize the department.  Is this true and if so why if the department might not be around after august???

A >>> – It is true.  However, this is all that I can say on the matter since it’s in our attorney’s hand.

***************************************************

Q >>> – Why are so many of your meetings scheduled at 5 or 6PM instead of 7PM.  This is not convenient for the public to attend.  Your last meetings with the other towns was at 6 so I could not make them.  You should rethink these times!

A >>> – Our regular Trustees meetings are always scheduled on the first Monday of each month at 7PM unless they fall on a holiday when they are then rescheduled the next day at the same time.  Special meetings and work sessions are a little different.  ALL meetings are open to the public, including special meetings and work sessions but the scheduled times are for the convenience of the participants and not necessarily that of the public.  Remember, we have to conduct our business in a public format and it’s not easy to get everyone together at a particular time.  We have to schedule the meetings when THE PARTICIPANTS can attend to address the business at hand.  The scheduled times for our last three work sessions with Macedonia, Northfield Village and the Valley Fire District were chosen by them and agreed to by us.  If you cannot attend any particular meeting you can obtain an audio copy of the meeting or the meeting minutes from the Townhall or the Township website and finally, you can read about them in the local papers.

 ***************************************************

Q >>> – Paul – we have gotten a threatening voice mail message, which I copied and pasted below.   (The last sentence is TimeWarner Cable’s voice mail typed interpretation of what was said – I’m sure you can figure it out.)   This is not the first time we have gotten voice mail messages like this, in the past we have deleted and ignored.  Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

“Hi this message is intended to contact you. My name is Steve Martin and I’m calling regarding an enforcement actions executed by US treasury and tending your serious attention. Ignoring this will be in intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate or grand jewelry for a federal criminal offense. My number is 310301426783103014267. I advise you to cooperate the doors and helpers to help you. Thank you.” – TWC

A >>> – One of the obvious tips that this is a scam is the comical grammar errors in the message.  Calls of this nature and email scams are on the rise.  There’s really nothing that can be done so the best thing to do is hang up the phone and delete those emails.  Use your caller ID and if you do not recognize the number or caller, let the call go to voicemail.  Over 90% of those making these calls will never leave a message.  And if they do, as in your case, just delete the message.  Personally speaking, I never answer calls outside of the 216, 330 and 440 area codes.  That alone eliminates the vast majority of unwanted solicitor and scam calls in my household.

Q >>> – Can the the building dept do something about 7735 Crestwood Lane. The grass is very high and the home is vacant, and for sale. There is a second one just a few houses down on the west side of the road, sorry, no address on that one. It has all kinds of kids toys in the front yard growing out of the high grass.

A >>> – I passed your complaint to our Zoning Department and I am happy to report that both lawns were mowed within a few days.

YOUR GENERAL COMMENTS

You had to send me the [Alien Cicada] picture huh!  I am dreading them.  I am surrounded by woods, and a creek.. yikes!!! I wouldn’t mind them so much if they didn’t land on me, or all over the car and the house.  I know they won’t hurt but just the sight of them around make me crazy……

Thanks for doing a great job on the newsletter.  I look forward to them.  Have a great day.

……………………………………………………………..

That’s a great [Cicada] photo.  I remember the 1999 invasion; walls were covered with them. My 4 cats will have a field day.

……………………………………………………………..

I thought you had a photo of my x-wife.

……………………………………………………………..

Looking down or sight forward, that Cicada photo was  freaky to the max. I was here when the last invasion erupted. NOISY!!!!!!!!!.. I am wondering whether the extreme weathers we had over the past few years may have an impact, especially the severe winters of frigid low temps for extended periods. It’s amazing that they do relatively little damage.

……………………………………………………………..

Thank you for all the information!  I will look forward to meeting our cicada friends!

……………………………………………………………..

I and countless others in our lovely community are appalled at the plans for a Meijers in our neighborhood.  We are already inundated with “big box stores”. This adds an insurmountable burden to our police, fire and emergency response times.  Traffic on Route 82 is already unmanageable.

This plan shows a complete disregard for our residents and their families.
