FIRE STATION VANDALISM UPDATE

There have been inquiries regarding updates on the vandalism that occurred at our fire station back in September.  Here is an update based on our records and information from Lt. Scott Cottle, Investigations Bureau Commander, Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The total cost of the vandalism was $15,149.88. We received a total of $14,899.88 in reimbursements from our insurance company.  Our deductible was $250.00.

When asked for an update from Lt. Cottle, he wrote, in part, “We believe we have done everything we can to determine who damaged fire department equipment.  However, no one has confessed and we have no physical evidence that can prove anyone responsible.  As you know, we have a gut feeling who the suspect is but he and his attorney have refused to comment.  We still have the DVR.  We were told by fire department personnel it is live feed only but we want to check it anyway.” He went on to state, “. â€śWe did try to take it [DVR] to the Akron Police Department but they were unable to assist us.  We did not take it to BCI because of their backlog. They prioritize evidence processing and a case like this takes about a year to get results back.  We do know who did some of the writing on the plates.  The most severe charge for this could be a minor misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct citation but we will have to check with a prosecutor. “I am sorry this has taken so long but we were waiting for the DVR to be processed so the case could be wrapped up at the same time.”

RECYCLING WEEKLY vs BIWEEKLY

Our current contract with Kimble includes biweekly recycling as opposed to weekly in our previous contract.  Back then residents were provided with 18-gallon recycle containers. Under our current contract, residents were provided with 64-gallon containers, which is 3.5 times the capacity of the old 18-gallon containers.  This should be more than enough for the majority of residents to handle biweekly pickups.

I spoke with Don Johnson from Kimble about the inquiries that a few residents made about expanding the recycling back to once a week.  Don told me that more often than not, overloaded containers are the result of cardboard boxes or other bulky items.  He suggested that these items either be broken up or placed next to the recycle containers.  He also suggested that overflow recycle items be bagged in CLEAR plastic bags and placed next to the green containers.  The bottom line here is that there is no compelling reason, at this time, to change our recycling schedule.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MEMBERS OF

THE SUMMIT COUNTY COUNCIL

TO THE MEMBERS OF SUMMIT COUNTY COUNCIL:

I found it extremely disappointing to learn that you, the members of the Summit County Council, took it upon yourselves to protest President Trump’s immigration order.  The President has been in office for less than two weeks and fulfilled his promise, among many others, to address the contentious immigration issue.

Trump’s promises were made many months ago, and based on those promises the people elected him as OUR PRESIDENT.  Like him or not he is doing his job and I find it disgusting that you have taken it upon yourselves to chastise him.  You are supposed to represent the people of Summit County.  What evidence do you have to show that you are representing the will and wishes of the majority of Summit County residents?

As an elected Trustee in Northfield Center Township, I am not aware of any of our residents being asked for their input prior to your taking this insulting action against our President!  In fact, I have talked with other elected officials here in northern Summit County and none of them were consulted either.  What gave you the right to take this action on your own without input from the public?  We have plenty of local issues for you to address instead of wasting your time and ours by insulting and disrespecting our president and what I believe to be the majority of Summit County residents.

Summit County Council members Ron Koehler and Gloria Rodgers are the only members who had the common sense and respect to vote against this irresponsible action.  The rest of you would be well advised to do the job for which you were elected and to abide by the Oath of Office that you took when you were elected!

NOTE:  This was sent in response to a January 31st Akron Beacon Journal article titled, “Summit officials protest president – Council sends message of opposition over his actions on immigrants.”  My response has nothing to do with the immigration issue itself but with the Council’s involvement and its implied representation of the residents of Summit County.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q >>> – You mentioned in your last letter about the video system, you also mentioned that you had brought the subject up prior to the vandalism in the FD building. That got me thinking about the case. Is there anything new or has the case just becoming old news?

A >>> – Your answer is in the article above titled, “FIRE STATION VANDALISM UPDATE.”

YOUR GENERAL COMMENTS

To follow up, I would be interested in the weekly recycling pickup as I have the same issue with recycling piling up. I would be interested to see if there would be a cost difference between weekly recycling or everyone receiving a second recycling bin?

…………………………………………………….

Hi Paul.  I certainly am good with the biweekly pick up of recycling especially with the larger containers!  I still am very disappointed with Kimble when they continue to leave garbage contents from an emptied container strewn in yard and on road.

…………………………………………………….

As to the Narcan issue. Having some contacts from my old line of work and also family members who deal with this daily. Narcan just wakes them back up. If they are still breathing, Just haul them to the hospital and let the Hospital stick them in a ward and bring him down. While there, they can legally do blood draws and find out all the drugs, legal or otherwise he’s on. Then the Cops have more info to use when the charge him. A jail cell is not set up for someone going through withdrawal.  I hear and read stories about the Police and Fire departments responding to the same location 4 and 5 times for the same person. There was one report on the news last week where EMS and Police had been to the same
home 12 times in a couple of months for various people who were living in the home.  I agree with the person who commented about the low bond. This has got to stop.

…………………………………………………….

My wife and I had no idea that you guys did that kind of work for us.  THANK YOU for all of the extra commitment you have in running our township!!!!!

…………………………………………………….

$14,000 for a few cameras in Sagamore Hills and you only spent $1,200 for 16 camera’s?  The math says it all.  Thank you for all that you’ve done.
