Nordonia School Board Candidate Bio: Tammy Strong

My husband and I have lived in Sagamore Hills for almost 19 years.  We have two sons; one is a junior and the other is a freshman at Nordonia High School.  I am no stranger to this area.  I have family that lived on Brookdale Lane in Macedonia for many years, so I grew up playing on the playground at Ledgeview Elementary and swimming at Lake Plata.  My husband and I love the area and decided this would be a great place to raise a family.

I have worked for Etched Metal Company, located in Solon, Ohio, for 17 years, as their accountant/bookkeeper.  I have over 25 years accounting experience with strong analytical skills.  As a current Board Member, I bring 4 years of experience, and the ability to respect and value the opinions of others, while working collaboratively, to make the best decisions for our schools and community.  Every November, I attend the Ohio School Board’s Association Capital Conference, and other seminars throughout the year, to continually learn about the ever changing laws and regulations that affect our schools.  I feel it is important to know and understand the impact the legislation has upon our District.  I am an advocate for our entire community and believe accountability and transparency are important.

The Nordonia School District is good, but we can be better.  Four years ago, I spoke with a group of elementary school parents, and at that time I made the statement, “Don’t let this become the new norm.”  I was referring to all the cuts that had been made recently; program cuts, busing reduced to State minimum, reduction in class offerings, …  We are better than that.  I’m happy to say that, in the past 4 years, the District has been able to increase busing to all grades, K-12, for students living 1 mile or more from their school.  The stadium is completed, and programs and class offerings have increased, such as Spanish at the Middle School and AP classes at the High School.  Unfortunately, reduced State funding, growth in our community, and stagnant revenue makes it challenging to provide an outstanding education for our children, preparing them to compete in an ever changing global economy.  If elected for another term, I will continue to closely review the financial forecasts and our school’s performance, to ensure the best decisions are being made for our children and our community.
