PRESS RELEASE: Incident in Peninsula

On August 29, 2018, at approximately 5:19 a.m., the Village of Peninsula Police Department responded to the Brandywine County Club located at 5555 Akron-Peninsula Road in regards to damaged property. A Village Officer responded and encountered the 24 year old suspect on the property. The suspect subsequently assaulted the officer, striking him in the head and knocking him to the ground. The officer was semi-conscious on the ground when the suspect removed the officer’s service weapon from his (officer’s) holster. An employee of the golf course witnessed the assault and the theft of the officer’s weapon. The employee attempted to assist the officer and the male suspect fled on foot. A short time later, a shot was heard by the officer and the employee. The Village of Peninsula Officer was able to call for assistance via his police radio and additional officers responded to the scene. A perimeter was established and a search was initiated. The search resulted in the discovery of the suspect on the golf course. The suspect was found lying on the ground with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The suspect was transported to Akron City Hospital and he was later pronounced dead. The Village of Peninsula Police Officer was treated and released at Akron General Hospital. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office and the Village of Peninsula Police Department are investigating the incident.
