It’s spring cleaning time once again, and there’s a variety of things you need to do to get your home summer ready. While your to-do list is probably a mile long already, we’ve compiled a list of things that you should definitely have on the agenda. These spring home maintenance tips will help you protect your property and save you money in the long run.

Inspect Your Roof

No matter what kind of roof you have, it’s still subject to potential damages during the harsh winter season. It’s for this reason that checking your roof for any marks and holes is vital to maintaining your home. Neglecting to repair your roof could lead to water damage in the event of a storm—costing you more than it would have to fix the leaks from the start.

Clean Your Gutters

As heavy snow piles up on your rooftop, it can weigh down on your gutters and possibly bend or crack them in the process. Once the snow begins to melt, it’s important that you check the gutters for damages while also cleaning them. Cleaning the leaves and other items from the pipeline will keep water flowing into your yard rather than your home. If you put this chore off, you can face serious damage to your home.

Check Smoke Detectors

At least once a year you should be doing a regular check of your emergency notification devices, such as your smoke alarm or your carbon monoxide detector. Making sure that these devices are working properly and have new batteries is crucial to your safety. As you’re doing this, you also might want to check the electrical outlets and chords for damage. This is a good precautionary measure to make sure your home is free of fire hazards.

Prepare Lawn Equipment

In light of the approaching spring weather, it’s important that you get your lawn-care appliances ready for use. This process includes having your tractors and mowers tuned up, replacing the oil, and giving them a few new gallons of gasoline. As a side note, be sure that you store any extra oil and gas for your lawn equipment in a vented, locked area.

Have the AC Unit Cleaned

Since your AC unit has been sitting unused all winter, it’s crucial that you get it tuned up by a professional before you turn it on. The inner mechanics of the system can become brittle when sitting idle in the frigid temperatures for that long; a professional should be the first one to take a look at it before you begin using it again. Otherwise, parts can break as they begin moving and you will end up stuck with the repair costs.
