At a Wednesday night work session, Mayor Jesse Nehez and Council discussed once again who the next Police Chief of Northfield Village would be. All of Council, along with Mayor Nehez and Law Director Brad Bryan were present. Newly appointed Ward B Councilman Keith Czerr sat in on the meeting as well. After reportedly a heated exchange, amongst council members, it appears Mayor Nehez might have the four votes needed to confirm Officer in Charge/ Sgt. John Zolgus at next Council meeting as the new chief. Councilor Gary Vojtush maintains he would prefer an outside candidate being brought in, feeling that the department is divided between Sgt. Zolgus and Lt. Jamie Mackie. It appears that among the remaining five council members (including Czerr), Mayor Nehez has at least four affirmative votes necessary for legislation to pass to appoint Sgt. John Zolgus as the new Police Chief. Mayor Nehez has stated in the past that if the legislation to appoint Sgt. Zolgus doesn’t get passed, Zolgus will remain as the Officer in Charge for the foreseeable future. Zolgus will have a one year probationary period, if he is named the new Police Chief.
