3 Tips for Staying Safe this Winter

Winter is a time for warm drinks and toasty fires, but unfortunately you can’t always stay nice and cozy throughout the season. When icy storms and freezing temperatures hit, it’s important to have a plan for staying safe and healthy. Be prepared with these three tips for staying safe this winter.

Prep Your Car

Low temperatures and icy roads can take a toll on your vehicle. It’s important to keep an eye on the tire treads and antifreeze levels throughout the season so you’re in good shape when a storm hits. You should also stock your car with some winter essentials. Having a spare coat, gloves, hat, and other warm layers can be a lifesaver if you find yourself stranded out on the road. Other winter kit essentials include a phone charger, flashlight, and a blanket.

Drive Safe

While it’s important to prepare your vehicle, the best defense against bad road conditions is to drive carefully. When it comes to tips for staying safe this winter, this is at the top of the list. Leave extra space between yourself and other vehicles when the roads are slippery or visibility is low. Use your lights, blinker, and windshield wipers accordingly. You should also practice safe driving skills, such as defensive driving, every time you hit the road.

Prep Your Home

There are several things you can do both inside and outside of your home to prepare for a safe winter. Check your gutters and roof for any sign of leaks or other damage. It’s also a good idea to check and install or replace insulation, weather stripping, and other winterizing supplies. For the interior of your home, make sure you always have supplies on hand in case of a bad storm or power outage. If you have a fireplace, stock up on wood and keep some of it on a covered porch or inside your home to ensure it stays dry. Keep your cabinet stocked with non-perishable items such as pasta or canned soup. You should also always have a supply of batteries, working flashlights, and candles (along with matches or a lighter).
