HANDS ON FROM THE START

Years of training and experience in the technical and skilled trades opened the doors for my successful working career and the many hobbies and sidelines that I practice and enjoy today.  Our Township has been a beneficiary since I brought these skills with me when you first elected me to the office of Trustee.  And in so doing, I saved the taxpayers (YOU) thousands of dollars.  How you ask?  With hands on work with many Township projects.

Back in 2007, I initiated the idea of the Olde Northfield Bicentennial celebration that involved all of the Nordonia Hills communities.  During the time leading up to the actual September 16th celebration, I was busy behind the scene as a Board member of the Bicentennial Committee.  I also volunteered to design, construct, pack and seal two 100-year time capsules.  I accomplished this throughout the summer of that year and had all construction material donated by Builder’s Emporium.  The time capsules now rest six feet beneath the front yard of our Townhall with a headstone that I designed and constructed to last for 100 years.

Throughout the following years, right up until today, I volunteered to work on numerous other projects.

For many years I assisted with the electrical projects involving the Christmas lighting around the Townhall and the surrounding parks.  When the legally required “Exit” signs in the Townhall began failing, we were quoted hundreds of dollars to replace them.  I saw this as a waste of money so I refurbished them with new parts for around $150.

The Townhall meeting room was always dimly lit with four large and inefficient 400-watt incandescent bulbs.  I replaced them with four white industrial CFL lamps that drew 75% less power but produced several times more light.

Security has always been a concern for me and became even more so after the fire station vandalism last year.  Sagamore Hills apparently had similar concerns when the newspaper reported that they installed two cameras and two DVRs at a cost of $14,000.  I proposed a system of my design to my fellow two Trustees and they quickly gave their approval.  My design included 16 color HD infrared cameras and two DVRs for our buildings for a total cost of just over $1000!  I oversaw the installation of the systems by our Service Department personnel and am happy to report that the systems have been operating flawlessly throughout this year.  Having the expertise to know what equipment to purchase and where to purchase it and to do all the work with our personnel, saved $13,000 when compared to others!

There are other instances where my technical and hands on involvement saved money for our Township.  They will be included in future articles during this campaign season.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q >>> – Speaking of cars speeding down the street there is someone on Crestwood Lane that speeds up and down the street at any time of the day or night. I heard the car speeding down the road as late at 1AM. There are black marks (spin out marks) on the street, I don’t know who is doing this or where they live but it is dangerous.  PLEASE HELP. Thanks for all your help!!!!!

A >>> – We know exactly who is doing this and the Sheriff’s Department knows as well and they have been trying to catch him in the act.  It would greatly help if someone could get a video of his antics and report each incident to the Sheriff. There are other problems concerning this individual that have generated numerous complaints that are currently being investigated.

Q >>> – Hi Paul,  We have a situation in our area (the “Wicks” off of Brandywine Road) . There have been a number of animals which have died without a mark on them. They were not killed by a coyote for food since they would have been dragged off rather than being left in plain sight. I had a mother cat, kitten and skunk die in my yard; my neighbor (our street Sherlock Holmes) thinks somebody is putting out poison since there have been so many animals in the last couple of months which have died (a dog, three cats, raccoon, skunk and more). The skunk that died had yellow flakes of something all over its little face and paws. It’s a horrible way to die. I can’t believe that anyone would do something this vile but these days I suppose it is possible. There are also many younger children that are not supervised who run around or bike in this area;  they might get into it too.

My question is, if my neighbor, Sherlock, and I, Watson, can find out who is doing this or how it is happening, is there anything that can be done? It may be as simple as some unaware person who leaves their garage door open all of the time and the animals may be getting into weed killer, antifreeze or whatever. Regardless, people should not be letting their pets or children out without supervision. I feel we have a duty to try and protect those who need our protection the most in this area.

A >>> – I sincerely hope that this is some kind of accident or a strange coincidence.  I’ve passed this on to the Sheriff’s Office.  In the meantime, if you or anyone else finds any evidence of poisoning, PLEASE contact the Sheriff because there are laws against this and rest assured those laws will be enforced to the max!

Dear Paul:

I got your email regarding Donations and Assistance for Disaster Relief.  It is wonderful that we as a community can help the people suffering from flooding in Houston Texas.

Can you promote (on your email/trustee newsletter) advising neighborhoods that they can work together and get their drainage ditches cleaned out as a neighborhood effort instead of waiting or relying on the Township or County to step in and clean up their backyards?  This past weekend all of the neighbors on both sides of Marwyck up to Bayberry donated money for an excavator and helped in some capacity (digging, providing water, moral support, etc.), to clean out the ditch.

Most of the families on both sides of Dorwick up to Beacon Hill also contributed donations ($50 to $100) for the excavator.  Rick Youel donated his entire weekend operating the excavator to clean out the ditches.  He should be publicly recognized by the Township for donating his time to help the people suffering from flooding in the Wicks.  He received nor did he ask for any money for his time in operating the excavator.   We still have some more clean up to do but a majority of the work was done for the benefit of the entire neighborhood up to Olde 8.  I do not think we will be flooding any time in the future.

It’s important to promote the aid needed for Houston Texas, it’s also important that we promote volunteerism in our community and recognize those people in our own backyards that are helping their neighbors by donations and assistance.  By their example other neighborhoods suffering from flooding may have some recourse by working together other than waiting for the Storm water management passage and Brubaker to remediate their flooding issues.

Thanks!

Just a ‘thank you’ for the [Pleasantview] ditch repair. Hopefully the structure will be stabilized along with it looking a lot better.

Please Boycott and do NOT use the $1.00, $20.00, $50.00, & $100.00 bills, as they depict slave owners on them. Gather all of these hideous forms of racism and send them to me, and I will see to it that they are disposed of properly. You don’t have to thank me, I do this as a public service for my country !!!

You’ve been very helpful to us and very informative to the community.  We appreciate your hard work.  Just want to let you know, you’ll have our vote!
