‘OHIO EDISON’ & OTHER SCAM ALERTS
There is a new scam being perpetrated in our area that everyone should be made aware of. The scam was reported to me by Summit County Sheriff’s Deputy Bob Alderman who has already taken two reports in Northfield Center.
This phone scam works like this ….. Your phone rings and the Caller ID shows the call originating from OHIO EDISON at 800-633-4766. One of the callers identifies herself as “MARIA DIAZ” who advises you that there is a problem with your electric bill and that you have to call 844-372-7268. When you call that number, “Louis Martinez” answers the call and warns you that if you do not pay a certain amount of money, your power will be turned off and that it will take ten days to turn it back on once the bill is paid! These calls are being made to folks whose bills are paid in full!
Ohio Edison is NOT involved in this scam. The perpetrators are spoofing their 800 number to make it appear on the caller ID that the call is genuine. This is very similar to all those 467 and 468 numbers that are being spoofed to make you think a local person is calling you only to find out that the callers are from unknown companies trying to sell you something.
There is also another scam going around that involves a robo-call advising that there is something wrong with your computer and that you need to call a number that the caller gives you. I’ve already heard from residents who have received these calls. I even received one of these calls myself. They left a voicemail just today!
Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you get a call from these people just hang up. Better yet, use your caller ID and don’t even answer calls from anyone who you don’t know. Let the call go to voicemail or answering machine. If the call is legitimate, the caller will leave a voicemail!

A big shout out to the Road Department that came down Lucy Lane! Thanks for getting all those big piles of leaves at our end of the street. I noticed at the end, one guy even cleaned up the leaf “dust” left over from all that grinding, truly appreciate your hard work and a job well done!
