Summit County Pays Tribute to Workers at Memorial Ceremony

On Friday, April 26, 2019, Summit County officials presented a proclamation to the International Chemical Workers Union Council in recognition of Workers Memorial Day. The annual ceremony is held to remember those who have died, been injured or become sick because of their job, and to remind the community that every worker has a right to a safe job. Also present at the ceremony were officials from the City of Akron, Tri-County AFL-CIO, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

“Unions have worked for decades to safeguard workers’ rights to healthy working conditions and to guarantee protections that have made jobs safer, saved lives, and prevented workplace injuries,” said Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro. “Still, thousands of occupational accidents and work-related illness occur every year. As we honor those who have suffered or died on the job and remember the victories unions have won for workers’ rights, we also renew our commitment to the protection of these victories and the fight to win even stronger worker protections.”

The proclamation calls on all residents of Summit County to stand with workers to advocate for safe and healthy work environments that ensure every worker returns home at the end of each workday, safe and unharmed.
