A Heart Warming Birthday Celebration

COVID-19 puts a damper on a lot of things, one of them being family gatherings. When Rita Brooks, a friendly, loving mom, and healthcare worker, shared her story with me, I closed my eyes and imagined how the world would be if all families were like this refined and cheerful. This surprise birthday celebration story will not only warm your heart but inspire you to be a better person.

Rita Brooks was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in Hudson, Ohio. She now resides in Bedford, Ohio. On April 10, she received the biggest surprise of her year, Rita’s seven siblings, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members from Twinsburg, Akron, Maple Heights, Shaker Heights, and Wickliffe all participated in a  birthday car parade to surprise the jovial hospital clerk for her birthday! Rita’s three daughters and husband were equally surprised. Distance can’t keep this close and supportive family apart. The family practiced all CDC healthcare guidelines sporting masks and social distancing during the parade. Because Rita is an essential Cleveland Clinic healthcare worker, the family knew that safety was important to her and respected her wishes. The party consisted of singing, dancing, and a beautifully decorated cassata cake from Bararonas Bakery was served, win take-home containers.” The party was different but loving.” Rita explained.” We were not able to hug like we usually do, and it was hard not being able to hold the gathering very long.” Rita emphasized that even though the party was different, it was fun, emotional, and of course, safe. The healthcare worker’s Easter was more low key; the holiday was spent attending church service online, making breakfast for the household, and cooking dinner.

Aside from her family life, Rita exudes a genuine personality at her place of employment. She follows all CDC rules, such as keeping her distance from co-workers and patients, wearing a mask, wearing PPE, and educating others on how to stay safe. Rita went on to explain how dealing with the virus is stressful and how she is afraid of contracting the virus and spreading it to loved ones. She knows people that have contracted the virus and prays for their recovery. On a brighter note, the virus has made her and her family more creative in how they interact. She also believes that COVID-19 has brought more teamwork to her workplace.

I hope this story helps bring out the best in people and brings individuals from all walks of life together. COVID-19 does not have to negatively impact every part of our lives. Take some time to find creative ways to spend time with loved ones and watch how fast your mood changes.Â
