Do You Know What a Strainer Is?

Strainers- we have talked a lot about this danger on the river. A strainer by definition is an object or clump of objects that allow water to pass but holds up any solid object (kayaks, you!). A strainer poses a significant drowning risk, trapping a person underwater with the incredible force of moving water. No better example of this danger is this kayak that was found trapped 3 foot underwater when we lifted the large tree downriver of Tannery Park.
The owner of the kayak picked up his kayak yesterday and shared his lucky story. As part of a group of 3 kayakers going down river Saturday, the tree down surprised them all. One kayak was able to get to safety on RIVER LEFT, the other able to get out on RIVER RIGHT, the strong current took the last kayaker right into the tree. As he hit the tree, the kayak quickly rolled and he was underwater, pulled under the tree. Thankfully his body cleared the branches and he came out safe on the other side!
These type of strainers are part of nature. Trees along rivers can weaken very easily and often fall. Making scouting your river route vitally important. If you come upon a strainer suddenly and are being drawn into it, get aggressive as if you life depends upon it..because it does. You want to propel your body up onto the strainer if you can. The worst place to be is in the water or under the strainer.
As always, scout your route, go with a friend, tell others your plans in case you don’t return in time, only paddle in conditions you are prepared for and ALWAYS wear a life jacket!
