He relished in his time spent with his family, especially as “Pop” to his two grandchildren – Loretta Jean McKinney and Franklin McKinney.
At the age of three, Mark’s parents gifted him his first ukulele which sparked his life-long passion for music. He was a beloved musician in the Cleveland area who was revered for his talent and dedication to his craft. He had an appreciation for many genres including rock, R&B, jazz, and classical, and was inspired by his favorites including Johnny Winter, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Dave Mason, and Taj Mahal. He could be found with a guitar in his hand at just about any given moment which he played beautifully and effortlessly. He loved sharing his passion with others through performing, and was constantly adding new instruments to his repertoire. He enjoyed imparting his knowledge through teaching at Makin’ Music for the last several years.
Mark had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. When he wasn’t playing a gig or enjoying time with his family, he loved camping, fishing, hiking and swimming, and never missed an opportunity to take his bike on the towpath. He regularly attended local flea markets. He was also very proud of accomplishing nearly 10 years of sobriety.
Mark was a great friend to many with a heart of gold, and he made a lasting impression on everyone who crossed his path.
In keeping with Mark’s loving and generous spirit, it was his decision to donate the gift of life through eye and tissue donation.
