County Executive and Council Oppose Ohio Senate Broadband Amendment

252

SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—On Monday, June 14, 2021, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and County Council passed a resolution opposing an Ohio Senate Omnibus Budget Amendment which would effectively prohibit new construction of public-owned broadband networks, as well as the ongoing provision of broadband services provided by public-owned networks such as Fairlawn Gig and Hudson’s Velocity Broadband. If enacted, this amendment will harm the ability of Ohio residents and businesses to participate in the 21st century digital economy. High quality and affordable broadband options are needed to support online school and work, access to healthcare and medical information, conduct efficient business operations, and ensure safety forces can communicate with one another for public safety. The resolution received unanimous support from County Council.
