AKRON – The Nonpartisan Independent Council Fair Districting Commission has released a proposed map redrawing Summit County Council districts.
The commission is seeking public input on the proposed map, which can be found here along with current district boundaries. Summit County residents interested in providing comments on the proposal can email the commission at feedback@summitoh.net as well as attend the Commission’s public meetings, taking place in Summit County Council Chambers.
“We encourage residents to provide us feedback so we can take their input under consideration,” Commission Chairman Irv Sugerman said. “We want the public to be a part of the process as we draw new council districts.”
In 2015, Summit County voters overwhelmingly supported establishing a nonpartisan commission appointed by county council to draw and approve new district boundaries based on the 2020 census.
Summit County Council appointed the five-member commission on August 30. Beginning on September 14, the commission has met each Tuesday to discuss the 2020 Census numbers and work on the new council lines. Population shifts within Summit County during the past 10 years dictate that council districts must change to comply with the Summit County Charter as well as established state and federal redistricting laws.
The commission could vote on the new maps as soon as October 19 at its next regularly scheduled meeting, Sugerman said. The other members of the commission are: Tracy Carter, Michael Callahan, Cazzell Smith, and Francis Buchholzer.
