On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at approximately 3:35 p.m., the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the Summit Metro Crash Response Team investigated a crash in the City of Green. The crash occurred on Interstate 77 South near the Lauby Road exit. When the crash occurred, a 54 year old male from Barberton was driving a 2014 refuse truck south on Interstate 77 behind a 2020 Freightliner driven by a 32 year old male from Green. The driver of the refuse truck failed to maintain an assured clear distance and struck the rear of the trailer being pulled by the Freightliner. The refuse truck went off the left side of the roadway and overturned before coming to final rest under the Lauby Road overpass. The driver of the refuse truck suffered serious injuries and was transported to Akron City Hospital by the Green Fire Department. The southbound lanes of Interstate 77 were shut down completely for approximately one hour. Some of the roadway remained closed while the crash was being investigated and the roadway was being cleared. The highway was completely re-opened approximately five hours after the crash occurred. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Summit Metro Crash Response Team.
