The Akron-Summit Council on Holocaust & Genocide Education will hold an Educational Seminar “Echoes of the Holocaust: Antisemitism Then and Now.” This event will be held on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024 from 5:30- 7:30pm at the Akron-Summit County Public Library Auditorium, “60 S High St.” The event is free and open to the public. Moderated by WKYC’s Senior Reporter and Commentator Leon Bibb, this event will be a discussion of the history of antisemitism, its ongoing impact on our world today, and actions that can be taken to address it. An educational presentation by Barb White will be followed by a panel discussion will including educators, Holocaust experts, a second-generation Holocaust survivor and community activists. ‘Echoes of the Holocaust’ offers an opportunity to connect with others who are passionate about combating hate and discrimination. It provides a valuable chance to gain knowledge and discover ways to fight against hate of all kinds within the community. By bringing together community leaders, educators, activists and second-generation survivors this event presents an opportunity to learn and work together. In this way we can ensure everyone is empowered to do our part to recognize and quash hate in the community.
Barb White is the curator of the Akron-Summit Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education’s resource list for educators as well as a judge for over 20 years of the writing portion of the Akron-Summit Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest. Ms. White served for 31 years at the Akron-Summit Public Library where she shared Holocaust literature and film with customers of all ages, for personal and pedagogical use. Additionally, the thesis for her Master’s in Library Science in 1991 was an examination of Holocaust published works, both fiction and nonfiction, intended for middle and high-school readers. Also, Ms. White has served on Ohio’s Holocaust and Genocide
Education Network (HGEN) where she shared her knowledge of Holocaust resources for youth and educators extensively.
At the conclusion of this event, information will be shared regarding the 37th Annual Akron-Summit Holocaust Arts & Writing Contest. This year’s theme is Lessons of the Holocaust: Countering Discrimination, Apathy and Denial. This contest is open to students grades 6-12 who live or attend school in Summit County Ohio. Teachers and educators are urged to attend. Important dates, contest rules, entry forms, resources, and the work of past winners can be found at AkronSummitHolocaustEducation.org.
