Superintendent Casey Wright opened the meeting by acknowledging January as School Board Appreciation Month, thanking board members for their dedication and highlighting their three key responsibilities: being champions for students, mentors for staff, and representatives of the community.
During public comment, several community members spoke about the district’s financial challenges and need for adequate funding. Speakers emphasized the importance of maintaining educational quality and urged support for upcoming levy efforts.
The board discussed five different levy scenarios that could potentially appear on the May 2025 ballot:
- A one-mill permanent improvement levy for five years
- A one-mill safety and security levy for five years
- A five-mill combination levy (4.5 mills for operating expenses, 0.5 mills for permanent improvements)
- A five-mill continuous operating levy
- An eight-year emergency levy generating $7.3 million annually
After discussion, three of the proposed levy options were approved to be sent for certification from Summit County. The board will hold a special meeting on January 28th to make a final decision on which levy option will appear on the May ballot.
In other business, the board approved several personnel items including supplemental contracts for winter drum line and ski club advisors. The board also approved purchase service contracts related to the high school’s upcoming production of “The Addams Family.”
The treasurer’s report indicated total receipts of $27.7 million and expenditures of $28.8 million through December 2024, with an unencumbered fund balance of approximately $11 million.
The next regular board meeting will be held on February 18, 2025 at 7:00 PM at Northfield Elementary School.
