Summit County Kicks Off Clear the Shelter Month with Adoption Event

Summit County Animal Control will launch its annual Clear the Shelter adoption month with a kickoff party August 2 from noon to 2 p.m. at the facility on Opportunity Parkway in Akron.

The event marks the 11th year of the nationwide pet adoption drive that has helped more than 1 million pets find homes. Locally, August also celebrates 15 years since Summit County Animal Control moved to its current facility.

County Executive Ilene Shapiro and animal control staff will host the celebration featuring free treats for visitors and their dogs, meet-and-greets with adoptable animals, and giveaways promoting pet adoption.

Dog adoption fees will be reduced to $28 during the event, down from the regular $96 fee. All animals come microchipped and fully vetted, including bloodwork, flea treatments, deworming, spay or neuter procedures and vaccinations. A Summit County dog license is included in the adoption cost.

Adopters during the kickoff event will receive additional giveaway items beyond the standard adoption package.

The facility is located at 250 Opportunity Parkway in Akron. The event runs from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 2.
