The Historical Society of Old Northfield will host a free open house at the Palmer House Museum as part of the statewide Ohio Open Doors initiative marking Ohio History Connection’s 250th anniversary celebration.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum, located at 9390 Olde 8 Road in Northfield.
Displays and collections
Visitors will be able to view several pieces from the museum’s permanent collection during the open house. Featured displays include a period coin collection, an overlay map of the local area and a selection of historic quilts.
These items offer a look into daily life and craftsmanship from earlier generations in the Northfield area. Guests are encouraged to take their time moving through the displays and ask questions of volunteers on hand.
Hands on activities for all ages
Beyond the exhibits, the open house will feature several hands on activities meant to give visitors a feel for historic daily tasks. Butter churning and coffee grinding demonstrations will let guests try their hand at chores once common in area households.
Writing with a quill pen will also be available, offering a glimpse into how correspondence and records were kept before modern writing tools. Making wax ornaments rounds out the list of activities, giving families a take home craft tied to the day’s historic theme.
