A Bathroom Redesign Case Study: Revolutionizing Home Design for Mobility Issues

Our team recently had the opportunity to assist a client who was experiencing mobility issues, resulting in the need for them to move to the first floor of their home. Unfortunately, the first floor did not have a full bathroom, which posed a challenge. Our design consultants collaborated with the client and explored options to simplify and meet their needs. After careful consideration, we decided to undertake a complete redesign of their existing half bath, converting it into a fully functional wet room equipped with a shower, toilet, sink, acrylic medicine cabinet, and waterproof toilet tissue dispenser.

To achieve this, the existing floor was opened, and a shower drain was connected to the existing piping. We also installed a wider door to provide more space for caregivers to assist with bathing. A pre-pitched (tufform base) was installed for the shower floor, replacing the subfloor. We then added an acrylic slip-resistant shower floor and rerouted the plumbing for the sink to create more bathroom space. A Moen shower valve and handheld slide bar were also included, along with strategically placed grab bars for comfort and safety for the client. Electrical outlets were rerouted, and a waterproof lighting fixture was installed in the ceiling. Finally, we replaced the existing toilet paper holder with an acrylic enclosed holder to keep the toilet paper dry and usable.

Thanks to the innovative ideas of our design team and the use of cutting-edge technology, we were able to provide our client with a new bathroom that is both convenient and more functional for their needs as a physically challenged individual.

Having an accessible bathroom is incredibly important for individuals with physical disabilities, mobility issues, or any other medical condition that affects their ability to move around easily. It provides a greater sense of independence, safety, and dignity, which  are essential for maintaining mental and physical well-being.
