This summer was truly a major transformation for the Cleveland Sports Show (see podcasts here) as well as myself. I was gifted the tremendous opportunity to intern at the WAKR Radio Station in Akron, Ohio, with the Ray Horner Morning Show. It was here in which I absorbed the multitude of information and tips not only of how his show is produced, but also how I could improve the Cleveland Sports Show. You may also know, that I also had the pleasure of actually going on the air with Mr. Horner, and discussing topics such as the Cavaliers and the Nordonia Hills Community.
You can listen to two audio clips of Darayus on the air with WAKR’s Ray Horner here.
Once I was able to understand how Mr. Horner had organized his morning show, I was fortunate enough to participate in this systematic process; including small details such as commercials, to entire work flows for the radio station. I definitely learned that there is no shortage of love for Cleveland Sports on the Ray Horner Morning Show, especially with the excitement of the Indians! And now with the Browns beginning their quest for a title, there is even more buzz around the station. For the first few days of my internship, I would sit next to Mr. Horner with a pair of headphones on, and listen to him on the show. It was here in which I learned about the specific tone and voice that I radio host uses when engaging an audience in a specific topic, at such an early time in the morning. To be more precise, the show began at about six o’clock in the morning. However, this does not take away the fantastic experience I had this summer at WAKR with Ray Horner. The knowledge that I took away from there will always stick with me, and I am excited to announce that once the Cavs’ season begins, I will be giving an analysis of their week on the Ray Horner Morning Show! A special thank you to Ray Horner and the WAKR Staff for an educational and beneficial summer!
