On 8/21/19 an 83 year old Macedonia resident walked in to the police station to report a scam. See previous reported scam here.
The reporting party, stated that the incident started a few days ago when he turned on his computer and received a bunch of error messages. He stated that the error messages told him to call a phone number to get his computer fixed. The resident called the number and the subject on the other line told him he had to pay $150 in order to get his computer running again. The Macedonia resident stated he then entered in his credit card number to pay $150. He stated that the issue was not resolved so he called them back to ask why. The person on the other end of the phone call told him there was a problem and they will be refunding his money. The resident stated the subject then called him back shortly after and told him they accidentally transferred $2000 into his account. The resident said that person on the call asked him to return the money but the only way was to pay by gift cards. On 8/20/19 he went to Wal-Mart and Target and bought $1800 in gift cards. Then he called the subject back and gave him the gift certificate numbers.
A friend of the Macedonia resident said she believes this was a scam and wanted to get it taken care of right away. They went to the bank and shut down all off the Macedonia resident’s accounts.Â
After investigating some more, it appears that the subject transferred $2000 from the Macedonia resident’s savings account and moved it into his checking account. This made it appear that the caller was telling the truth about them putting too much money into his account. The Macedonia resident stated that he did not make this transaction and he believes it may have been done by someone accessing his account.Â
The police were able to get some of the gift cards stopped. So far the total amount taken from the Macedonia resident is $1150. The police advised the Macedonia resident to get the statement information from his credit card company so they can attempt to track down the original account that received the $150.
