Ask Your Local Audiologist: Can anyone get a cochlear implant?

379

Question: Can anyone get a cochlear implant?

Answer: No, a cochlear implant is not an appropriate treatment for every hearing loss. Cochlear implantation is considered when hearing aids are no longer improving the clarity of speech for a patient. To be approved for implantation, the patient must be approved based on their current hearing status with hearing aids and their readiness for surgery. This is often referred to as being audiologically and medically approved for a cochlear implant. Other factors that may be considered during the approval process include but are not limited to the patient’s history of hearing aid use, hearing loss duration, balance function, insurance coverage, and hygiene.
