Ask Your Local Audiologist: How often should I clean my hearing aids?

Question: How often should I clean my hearing aids?

Answer: I recommend my patients wipe off their hearing aids daily or weekly, depending on the amount of wax they accumulate. Many hearing aids have a wax trap system which protects the speaker portion of the device. If the hearing aid seems dull or dead, changing the trap that collects wax before it damages the hearing aid can improve the function. It is also important to periodically remove debris from the microphone ports. I recommend cleaning the microphone ports and changing the wax trap every two to three months. In addition to general maintenance at home, I recommend patients have their hearing aids cleaned in office every four to six months. During an in-office cleaning, I can perform a deep cleaning on the speaker and microphones. I will also perform a listening check to see if the hearing aid is functioning properly.
