Question: Is the buzzing in my ears considered tinnitus even though it is not a ringing sound?

Answer: Tinnitus comes in many different forms. Though ringing is a common percept for those with tinnitus, tinnitus can resemble a variety of sounds. The Mayo Clinic defines tinnitus as experiencing ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears. In my experience, patient’s can perceive buzzing, hissing, humming, whooshing, and or ringing. Patients have also reported more melodic forms of tinnitus. Tinnitus can also vary in pitch and volume. If you are experiencing noises in the ears, it is recommended to consult your physician and get an updated hearing test.
