Question: What is a telecoil and how can I use it?
Answer: A telecoil is a coil of wire located in some hearing aids. In the presence of a looping system or a phone, the telecoil can be utilized to send an auditory signal electromagnetically from an electronic device, like microphone, directly to a hearing aid. The most common places you will find a looping system are churches, theaters, and museums. Use of a telecoil can improve the audibility of a signal by eliminating the distance between the signal and listener and any interference caused by noise in the environment. A telecoil can be accessed by switching to a telecoil program in the hearing aid. For most hearing aid users, this program will have to be added by your audiologist. Be aware that some hearing aids are not made with telecoil included. Check back next issue for more information about looping systems!
