Boy Got Rocked: Down Goes Tim Anderson (UPDATED)

This season has been one of ups and downs for Cleveland. However, Saturday night was certainly a highlight of the year. Despite the fact that the Guards lost the game by a score of 7-4 against the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field.

It’s what happened in the sixth inning with the score being 5-0 White Sox at the time. Guardians star 3B Jose Ramirez ripped a double down the right-field line that scored 2B Andres Jimenez. When sliding into second base this is when things got interesting.

The weirdest part is nothing looked too strange with the play itself to cause any type of altercation. Something must have been said or from the past that caused Jose to react in such a way at second base.

The tag was applied and all of a sudden Ramirez and Anderson square off at second base. Punches are thrown, the benches clear and there were many ejections. Both managers, Jose and Tim, pitcher Emmanuel Clase and third base coach Mike Sarbaugh are all gone.

Francona has been ejected three times alone this week all against the White Sox…

Via ESPN Stats & Info: It’s the 4th game in the last 20 seasons in which both managers and at least one player on each team were ejected. June 26, 2022 – Mariners at Angels, Aug 16, 2006 – Angels at Rangers, Apr 23, 2006 – Giants at Rockies.

The two teams play once more today and it will be interesting to see if there is any more heat between division rivals. Of course, the goal of every game is to win it, but it’s nice to see the team throw some smoke against the Sox and defend themselves when necessary.

Right now, the Guardians are 3.5 games behind the Twins for first place in the AL Central with a 54-57 record. The team certainly needs to improve in many actual baseball ways in order to contend for a playoff spot this season. But, a little entertainment every once in a while unrelated to the sport itself is fun for all…

Update:

Here are the suspensions that the MLB has handed down for the players/coaches involved in the Anderson/Ramirez brawl.

Tim Anderson: 6 games
Jose Ramirez: 3 games
Emmanuel Clase: 1 game
Terry Francona: 1 game
Pedro Grifol: 1 game
Mike Sarbaugh: 1 game

The Guardians do not play the White Sox again this season. We will have to wait and see if this carries over into next year and if there are any more altercations in 2024!
