Caring for Your Elderly Parents at Home During COVID-19

By now, we all know that older adults are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. We’ve all seen the heartbreaking stories coming out of Italy and China, where dozens of senior citizens died every day. We must protect older adults now more than ever. This is a resourceful guide for those caring for their elderly parents at home during this pandemic. Yes, this is a scary moment in history; however, we’ll get through it if everyone does their part.

Practice Good Hygiene

It’s critical that you constantly wash your hands if you’re caring for your elderly parents at home. There are so many unknown factors about COVID-19. Please, be as cautious as you can and practice good hygiene. Wash your hands consistently and wear PPE when you’re interacting with your parents. It’s also a wise idea to keep your house spotless during this time. Disinfect every area of your place and make sure you wash your parents’ bedding continuously while you’re in isolation. Keep your parents comfortable, too.

Stay Inside

You must practice social distancing if you’re taking care of your elderly parents at home right now. Elderly people are the most susceptible to getting COVID-19. Therefore, you must limit your interaction with the outside world as much as possible. You never know who could be a carrier of the virus. Don’t risk infecting your parents and stay away from as many people as you can. Book club meetings or wine nights with your friends aren’t worth jeopardizing your loved ones’ health. Also, you need to limit the amount of people who are visiting your parents at this time. Utilize FaceTime or other technology if your parents want to see other family or friends.

Keep Them Comfortable and Calm

Everyone is bound to get restless in quarantine, no matter their age. Try your best to keep your parents comfortable during this challenging time. Start by making their bed a cozy oasis that’ll bring them comfort and joy. Use soft bedding that’ll make them sleepy the minute their heads hit the pillow. Also, it’s best to use sheets made from natural fabric that is free of any dyes or additives, so their skin doesn’t get irritated. The last thing your parents need is to get an annoying rash from sheets that are covered in chemicals. Please, talk to your parents about the current climate, as well. Let them know they can express their worries or frustrations to you.
