Cleveland Sports Rundown

Greetings and welcome to this edition of Cleveland Sports Talk’s rundown! We hope to fill you in on the happenings of our teams.

The Cleveland Cavaliers went 4-0 in their summer league action thus far. It started with a 101-97 close win over Brooklyn, then a 99-76 win over the Toronto Raptors, next a 100-77 beat-down over the Memphis Grizzlies, followed by an 87-83 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

The first three games were played at COX Pavilion and the last game at the Thomas and Mack Center. The team will finish off summer league play against Brooklyn meeting up once again. The Cavs averaged in total 96.8 PPG and gave up 83.3 OPP PPG (13.5 DIFF).

Something incredible happened on July 14 for the Cleveland Guardians. Both Naylor brothers, Josh and Bo, hit two-run home runs in the same third inning against the Texas Rangers to make the score 4-0 at the time. Unfortunately, the team lost 12-4 even after that incredible feat.

The Guardians’ schedule for next year just got released recently. Now, the team is still battling for a division crown this year, so it is best not to look completely ahead. Even so, next season will be here before we know it.

Some highlights of the schedule are the season opener is March 28 in Oakland against the A’s. The season begins with a three-city trip to Oakland mentioned above, followed by the Seattle Mariners and then the Minnesota Twins. The home opener is Monday, April 8 against the Chicago White Sox. The All-Star Break is July 16-18. The last three games of the regular season are in Houston against the Astros on September 27-29.

Unfortunately, news came out that Guardians ace starting pitcher Shane Bieber was placed on the 15-day injured list. Bieber, for the season, has gone 5-6 with a 3.77 ERA, 95 K and a WHIP of 1.25. The official diagnosis is right elbow inflammation. Pitcher Michael Kelly has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus. In the minors this year, Kelly has gone 1-3 with a 2.73 ERA, 33 total innings pitched, 54 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.58. Let’s see what this kid can do.

There are just under 60 days until the Cleveland Browns begin the 2023 season this fall. The team starts the year by hosting the Cincinnati Bengals on September 10.

Currently, this is certainly not the most exciting time for Cleveland sports. Yes, the Guardians are in a playoff battle, but that is simply because the AL Central is a poor division. The Cavs have yet to begin their regular season. The Browns begin training camp on July 22 at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. It will be open to fans on August 1.

At the ESPY Awards on July 12 former Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, a man that helped win the team a championship in 2016, announced that he will be returning to the league officially for next year. It will be his 21st season since getting drafted by the Cavs in 2003. Currently, James is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The most important thing to remember as Cleveland fans is that there is always next year. Let’s hope something exciting occurs in the coming days that will bring fans joy. That more championships are in our future because we lovers of the teams deserve them. There is no question about that fact.

Hopefully, you enjoyed the rundown and have a great week!
