County of Summit Raises over $500 for Local Salvation Army

During the months of November and December, Summit County employees raised $570 for the Salvation Army of Summit County through the sale of holiday candy grams. The fundraising effort was held in support of the Salvation Army’s Annual Red Kettle Campaign. The candy grams were $2 each, with all proceeds benefiting the social services charity, and were delivered to County employees by Santa and his friends.

“I am so proud of all the County employees who contributed to the Salvation Army Candy Gram fundraiser,” said Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro. “Our local Salvation Army is a critical source of support and basic resources for many people in Summit County and the money raised will help make a difference in the lives of these folks. The candy grams also brought a great deal of cheer and excitement to County offices during this holiday season.”

The Salvation Army of Summit County has been serving Akron and the rest of Summit County since 1884. Services provided to the community include: emergency financial assistance for rent and utility payments; feeding programs such as hot meals, pantry, direct food distribution and homeless mobile outreach; children’s programs including overnight summer camp, day care and after-school care; disaster services and emergency response as needed. The organization also supports other local groups including CANAPI, the Community AIDS Network/Akron Pride Initiative, the Akron/Barberton/Summit County Continuum of Care and others.
