Fall Season Preview: Nordonia Girls Varsity Golf Team Aims for State Tournament Again

The Nordonia Girls Varsity Golf Team is gearing up for the upcoming 2023 season with the objective of once again qualifying for the state tournament. In 2022, the team emerged victorious in the National Division of the Suburban League, earning them a spot in the prestigious State Tournament held at The Ohio State Gray Course. This remarkable achievement marks the pinnacle of the school’s athletic history. Overseeing the team is Coach Greg Harris, who brings 12 years of coaching experience to the table. With her expertise, she will play a crucial role in helping the girls reach their full potential.

Leading the team this season are the two returning starters from 2022. These are our team captains: senior Brooke Barnes and junior Julia Gulla. Julia was the 2022 Player of The Year for the National Division of the Suburban League, and Brooke is a two-time Second Team All-League award winner. Both of them were also Honorable mentions in Northeast Ohio. Barnes displayed her prowess by averaging 41 strokes per nine holes and notching a season-best 77 at the Nordonia Classic. She also delivered an 82 at the district tournament and a commendable 169 at the state tournament. Known for her power off the tee and clutch putting, Barnes brings a formidable presence to the team.

The remaining members of the team consist of returning seniors Lauren Torain and Taylor Hawkins. They are joined by a talented group of sophomores, including Natalie Barnes, Maddie Eisner, Delaney Gorta, Jillian Rinas, Carley Sutton, Hilary Watson, and Chelsey Wolf. Our team is completed by freshman Polly Loney. Each member of the Girls Varsity Golf team has the potential to make significant contributions to the team this season.

Defending our title as Suburban League National Division champions will be a formidable challenge this year. Our competitors, Hudson, Stow-Monroe Falls, North Royalton, and Solon, have retained many of their key players from the previous season. The league title will be determined by four 18-hole tournaments, with the first one scheduled to take place at Old Avalon Golf Course in Warren on August 10th.

“The entire team has really been working hard and is making great progress with their games. We started our spring practices on one day a week in April and then moved to two days a week since school let out in June,” said Greg Harris.
Harris further explained how fortunate the team is and how practice has been: “We are very fortunate to have Windmill Golf Center right here in our Nordonia community, so it is very convenient for our team practices. They also allow our girls to practice there at any time, and the Windmill golf professionals are very generous in helping us out with tips and instruction whenever we are there.”

The team’s primary objective is to successfully qualify for the state tournament, a feat they have accomplished three times within the past four years. According to Coach Greg Harris,
“We will also be shooting to return to the state tournament this year when we tee up at the sectional tournament at Fox Den on October 5th”.
