A $51,000 grant will soon be out to work helping to shape up the Village of Northfield – literally.
The federal FEMA grant was recently awarded to the Village of Northfield Fire Department to help qualify three firefighters as peer trainers, and to purchase a bevy of bodybuilding and body shaping equipment, according to Northfield Fire Chief Jason Buss.
Buss announced the Health and Wellness Grant during the fire department report at the August 24th, regularly scheduled Council meeting.
The grant stipulates that 95 percent, or $48, 571 will be covered by FEMA. The village will need to pony up $2,428, which is the remaining 5 percent.
The grant is good through August 16, 2024, according to Buss.
Some of the required equipment paid for by the grant includes: a half rack, with bench, a plate loaded leg machine, a reverse hyper back machine, a treadmill, weight plates, an assisted pull up machine, rubber door mats, a set of dumbbells, a stair cardio machine, a bike, an ab machine, a Smith Machine, a rowing machine, a ski machine, a cable machine, a rope machine, exercise benches, a leg extension and curl machines.
The grant will also cover delivery fees.
“It would be my hope that this exercise equipment would be made available to all village employees to use,” Buss said.
Buss added that a gym and exercise room is being planned in the fire station renovation.
“This grant will cover the entire grant of outfitting that space,” Buss said.
Buss also gave an update on the fire department’s former engine which was replaced on August 11th.
According to Buss the former engine has been picked up by Auburn Career Center to be used in its fire service program.
Mayor Jennifer Domzalski described the new engine as “beautiful” August 25.
“I was in awe the first time I saw the truck,” Domzalski said. “It is such a stunning piece to add to our fleet.”
The mayor said she was “grateful that the Village was able to move forward with this purchase for our Fire Department.”
Domzalski has not ridden in the engine yet.
“But I was promised a ride whenever I am free,” she said.
