Nordonia was able to pull off a 41-40 win against the Barberton Magics on Friday. Nordonia came out with a strong defense, as well as a successful offense. This produced lots of yardage and points for the Knights. Throughout the game two players really stood out with some skillful plays helping Nordonia to victory. On defense it was Mike Westbrooks who was able to make decisive tackles at just the right moment. On offense it was Joel Jones who made some crucial receptions giving Nordonia the yardage they needed to score.
Nordonia was the first to receive the ball but was unable to cross the goal line on their first possession. Luckily on their second possession, Levak was able to throw two beautiful passes to Joel Jones to move the chains and put them in scoring range. Levak ran it into the end zone for Nordonia’s first touchdown. Nordonia then held Barberton forcing them to punt. Nordonia’s Billy Levak threw another beautiful pass to Joel Jones who ran it into the end zone for the Knight’s second touchdown of the evening making it 14-0. The score remained unchanged for the remainder of the quarter.
Starting off the 2nd quarter the Magics were able to wrestle the ball away from the intended Nordonia receiver and run it creating a first and goal scenario for Barberton. The Magics ran it in for the touchdown making it 14-7. Shortly after that, Barberton scored another 7 points bringing the score to 14-14. Nordonia’s next possession was promising with two completed passes that got Nordonia the yardage they needed. They were forced to kick for 3 points putting Nordonia ahead once again with a score of 17-14.
The beginning of the 3rd quarter started off rough when Barberton was able to run a 98 yard return off the kickoff for a touchdown. Nordonia was able to block the extra point making the score 17-20. QB, Billy Levak threw a long pass to Matt Hayes for a touchdown putting Nordonia back in the lead, 24-20. On Nordonia’s next possession the Knights kicked a field goal for 3 making the score 27-20. The Magics then ran it in for another touchdown bringing the game to another tie. The jubilation didn’t last long for the Magics, Billy Levak threw a pass through the traffic to find Cooper Rusk who ran it in for a touchdown. The score now Nordonia 34, Barberton 27.
The 4th quarter was a real nail biter for the fans. During Barberton’s first possession, they were able to run the ball in for a touchdown tying the game for a third time 34-34. The Magic’s were then able to score yet another touchdown putting the score at 34-40 with Barberton in the lead. Luckily Nordonia was able to block the extra point meaning all that Nordonia had to do was score a touchdown and make the extra point to regain the lead. Nordonia crushed it, doing just that! The Knights were up by one point with a score 41-40. The Knights held the Magics until time expired making this Nordonia’s first win of the season! Here is their full schedule.
