Business Spotlight: Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa Opening in Macedonia

Former Dunkin’ executive brings affordable luxury wellness to Gateway Shopping Center

Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa will officially open its doors in Macedonia on December 15, bringing therapeutic massage and facial services to the Gateway Shopping Center location between Nordstrom Rack and Sephora.

The new spa is the second northeast Ohio location for owner Bob Crowley, who opened his first Hand and Stone in Solon in May 2023. Crowley, a former Dunkin’ executive who spent a dozen years with the coffee chain, decided to transition from the restaurant industry to the wellness and self-care space after years of extensive travel.

During his tenure at Dunkin’, Crowley oversaw operations from Pittsburgh to South Bend, Indiana, expanding the brand from 200 to over 500 locations across the eastern Midwest. After approaching empty nest status and growing tired of spending 150 nights per year on the road, he began researching franchise opportunities outside the restaurant business.

Hand and Stone stood out among the options. The brand positions itself between budget massage chains and high-end luxury spas, offering what Crowley describes as affordable luxury. The membership-based spa operates on a monthly program model, making regular self-care accessible to a broader audience.

The Macedonia location will offer therapeutic massages including Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, Himalayan salt stone, prenatal, and oncology massage. The spa also provides facial services with advanced skincare treatments and technologies.

Crowley operates the business with his wife and son, who both left their jobs to join the venture. The Solon location has become one of the fastest-growing spas in Hand and Stone’s portfolio of more than 650 locations nationwide.

The Macedonia site appealed to Crowley due to its prime retail location near the intersection of Routes 82, 8, and Interstate 271. He had previously considered the area before opening in Solon.

Hand and Stone operates on a membership model priced at $79.95 per month, which includes one massage or facial treatment monthly. Additional treatments are available at the same rate. The spa is offering a founding member promotion for those who join before opening day. Founding members will receive a complimentary massage or facial during opening week and $30 in free service upgrades every month for the life of their membership.

The official opening is scheduled for December 15, which also marks Crowley’s 60th birthday.

The Macedonia Hand and Stone will be open seven days a week with extended hours and will accept both appointments and walk-ins.
