A garage is a great space for a workshop, but the first thing you’ll need to do is get the garage ready for work. We’ll show you how to make your garage the perfect workshop!
Start With a Cleaning and Decluttering
The first thing you should do if you’re transforming an existing garage into a workshop is to give it a deep clean and eliminate some of the leftover junk. If you’re like many homeowners, you treat your garage as a black hole for storage.
Start your garage makeover by clearing everything out of it, from the tools to the holiday decorations and anything else. When empty, thoroughly clean the garage so that your workshop starts fresh. With all the items cleared away, take the opportunity to declutter and throw away some things you don’t need to make it easier to organize.
Maximize Storage
If you plan to keep tools and equipment in the garage/workshop, you’ll need to add more storage. There are many ways to increase your garage’s storage capability, but one of the most effective strategies is vertical storage, like Slatwall panels.
Maximizing your storage with a Slatwall is an excellent idea because it allows you to hang practically anything in your garage, from workshop tools to gardening supplies or even bicycles. Don’t waste an inch of space!
Consider Redoing the Floor
You’ll likely have to redo or improve the floor to make your garage the perfect workshop. While concrete floors are usually fine for workshops, they can easily get dirty with grease and dirt, which makes them slippery and dangerous to work on.
Pro Tip
If your garage floor doesn’t already have one, consider adding an epoxy floor finish to make it easier to clean and less slippery. Then, consider adding some rubber mats to your workbench station to make standing in one place easier on your feet and legs.
Also, when renovating the floor, consider adding a floor ruler! Draw a ruler on the floor with permanent ink, and you’ll always have a ruler when needed.
Add More Lighting
One factor that many people forget about when turning their garage into a workshop is lighting. Garages often have standard, functional lighting in the middle of the space, which can cause dark and dim corners.
Such lighting is fine for short periods, but it’s not helpful for working in the shop for hours. Consider adding more lighting, like adjustable lamps, track lighting, or attachable LED lights for your workbench.
