Nordonia Hills residents will get the opportunity on August 8 to decide if they want to raise the percentage of votes needed for state constitutional amendments.
Issue 1, if passed, would require at least 60 percent of the votes to pass any new proposed constitutional amendment on a statewide ballot. Currently, passage requires a simple majority of 50 percent plus 1.
Issue 1 also contains two more pieces, according to the office of Secretary of State Frank LaRose.
If passed, Issue 1 also would require signature collection from 5 percent of voters from the last gubernatorial election in all 88 counties instead of the current 44.
And finally, if passed Issue 1 would eliminate the 10-day period which allows citizens to replace any signature deemed unfit by the secretary of state’s office.
This is the first time in about 100 years that a statewide issue has been voted on like this in Ohio.
According to Summit County residents are showing a growing interest in Issue 1, according to officials.
“There seems to be a lot of interest in this election,” according to Pete Zeigler, deputy director of the Summit County Board of Elections. “Lots of people are showing up and lots of people have requested an application.”
If passed, Issue 1 would take place immediately, according to LaRose’s office.
