Joyce Highlights Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Positive Economic Impact

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) showcased a new report released by the Great Lakes Commission highlighting the positive economic impact of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).

Congressman Joyce has championed the GLRI throughout his tenure in Congress. This report demonstrates that investing in the Great Lakes via the GLRI promotes economic growth and improves the quality of life for Northeast Ohioans. By cleaning up toxic hot spots, controlling invasive species, restoring wildlife habitat, protecting wetlands, and reducing the impact of harmful algal blooms, the GLRI returns more than 3-to-1, per dollar invested, in additional economic benefits throughout the region.

The report shows that every federal dollar spent on GLRI projects from 2010-2016 will produce the following impacts through 2036: $3.35 in additional economic output, $1.62 generated by tourism in the region, and $1.08 in a quality of life increase for residents in coastal communities.

“Protecting the Great Lakes is not a red or blue issue. I’ve met with residents and local stakeholders – I know first-hand that the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is a results-driven program that continues to drive Northeast Ohio’s economy,” said Rep. Joyce. “The regionwide impact of the GLRI continues to grow by leaps and bounds and I look forward to fighting hard with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to continue to preserve and protect our Lakes by supporting this program.”

Note: Congressman Joyce has championed efforts to fully fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Joyce has stood up to both the current and previous administrations in their attempts to cut funding for the GLRI. Rep. Joyce has been successful in his efforts to ensure GLRI is fully funded at its authorized level of $300 million.
