Calls on Congress to hold itself to a higher standard in its political discourse
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) joined Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) on a resolution [1] to censure Congressman Steve King (IA-05) for remarks made about white supremacy and white nationalism. Dave is the first Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives to join the resolution, officially making it a bipartisan effort to hold our nation’s political discourse to a higher level of civility and respect.
“Condemning white supremacy and white nationalism should be commonsense for anyone’s moral compass,” said Dave. “There is no place for this kind of disturbing ideology in the people’s House or our nation. As a conservative, I stand for principles and policies that ensure all Americans have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of who they are or what they look like. With this resolution, the House is sending a clear message that hate and intolerance will not be allowed to hinder our work to better the lives of our constituents.”
Dave made a similar public condemnation of white supremacy in the aftermath of the attack in Charlottesville last year that killed one woman and left many others injured, saying “The abhorrent acts of hate and bigotry witnessed [yesterday] in Charlottesville go against our American values. We all must stand up and condemn white supremacy.”
Other notable conservatives have also condemned King’s comments, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) [2], Representative Liz Cheney (WY-At Large) [3], Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) [4] and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) [5].
