Lollipop hires new teachers; upgrades classrooms as 2021-2022 school year gets underway

Lollipop Cooperative Preschool, located at 1280 E Aurora Rd. Macedonia, has been a leader in preschool education since 1958, and earned the distinguished honor of Hulafrog’s most loved area preschool in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Several classroom improvements over the summer and the hiring of two new teachers has made Lollipop an even more attractive option for area parents of 3,4 or 5-year-olds. In addition to its 3-year-old and Pre-K classes, the school offers extended day and enrichment options that further prepare children for kindergarten.

Lollipop as a co-op works with parent participation. Parents volunteer in their child’s classroom one to two times per month and serve on various committees to help the school operate smoothly. Through this participation, parents share in their child’s first school experience.

Parents of incoming students joined together over the summer to give the preschool classrooms an amazing upgrade. New carpeting tiles were installed, walls were given a fresh coat of paint, updated electrical wires and outlets were run, and window air conditioning units were put in place. In addition, new furniture was purchased, beautiful curtains and artwork have been hung and the rooms have a cheerful, inviting and organized look.

“The Lollipop Board members as well as several parents and teachers put a ton of time and energy into these classroom upgrades,” said Board President Kate Sebastian. “I couldn’t be prouder of the end result, and I’m thrilled for the incoming students and parents that will benefit from these updates.”

Lollipop’s exceptionally qualified staff of teachers

Lollipop teachers complete the coursework required by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). The curriculum follows the Ohio academic standards and helps to prepare thestudents to succeed in elementary school. Two of Lollipop’s well-loved, veteran teachers retired at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Pat Arko, who spent 30 years teaching at the school is still part of the Lollipop family as administrator. “I have two grandchildren being born this Fall, so I am looking forward to helping out with the babies, but I am thrilled to be able to help out at Lollipop too.”

Sue Codner, whose career as a teacher at Lollipop spanned 20 years, was an integral part of the teaching staff as well.

Carla Finelli was hired in August 2021 to replace Mrs. Arko as the 4-Day Pre-K Lead Teacher and Enrichment Lead Teacher. Finelli studied Education at Kent State University and is currently certified by the State of Ohio in Early Childhood Education. This is her 16th year teaching preschool.

“My goal in the classroom is to help the students form a genuine love for learning, to grow independently, and to build a positive foundation for continued education,” said Finelli.

Glenda Coleman was hired in July 2021 as the 4-Day Pre-K Assistant Teacher and replaces Codner’s role. She began her career in childcare over 20 years ago. Coleman earned her Child Development Associate and was recently selected to participate in the Summit County Scholars Program. She has also received her Daycare Management Certification.Glenda believes that working in the childcare field allows her to be a part of many different families and their lives. “It is satisfying to help prepare tomorrow’s leaders with the hope that I can make a difference,” she said.
