Long-time Macedonia Council Member to Step Down After 28 Years of Service

January 1 marked the first time in 28 years that Janet Tulley was not involved in city government. Tulley announced her decision to step down from her City Council seat during the December 12 Council meeting.

“I’m submitting my resignation effective December 31, which means it will be my last day as a Council member,” Tulley told Council. “And so, effective January 1, you will need to have a new Council member.”

Tulley explained that she and her husband, Greg, are downsizing from their current family home, which is no longer practical for them. “There haven’t been kids in it for a while,” she said. “So we are moving to a one-floor, no-basement, double-garage, sunroom bungalow. But it’s outside of town.” The couple tried to find a smaller home within Macedonia but couldn’t locate one within their budget, Tulley added. “You’ll see the moving truck pretty soon, but we won’t be out until after the first of the year.”

Transitioning Leadership

With one year remaining in Tulley’s term, the new Council member will serve through 2025. According to Tulley, City Council is responsible for appointing her replacement.

“Information will be posted on the city website,” Tulley said, recommending that applicants include their reasons for wanting to serve on Council. She also encouraged the Council to consider younger and more diverse candidates, noting, “The decisions they make will impact them 20 years from now.”

Mayor and Colleagues Honor Tulley

Mayor Nick Molnar led a standing ovation in Tulley’s honor during the December 16 meeting.

“Jan’s resignation is certainly a moment of transition for our city government, but we remain committed to ensuring continuity in leadership and service to the residents of Macedonia,” Molnar said. “While we will miss her contributions to Council, we will work closely with the remaining members to ensure a smooth process moving forward.”

Molnar confirmed that Tulley’s replacement will be appointed per the city charter.

“City Council will carefully consider qualified candidates to ensure the best person is chosen to represent our community and continue the work of the Council,” Molnar said. He also expressed gratitude for Tulley’s years of service.

“Jan has been an incredible advocate for our city and our residents,” Molnar said. “Her hard work and dedication have made Macedonia a better place, and I wish her all the best in this next chapter.”

A Legacy of Service

Tulley was first elected in 1995 and served nearly four full terms before being re-elected in 2013. During her tenure, she held roles such as Council President, Finance Chair, and representative to the Parks & Recreation Commission and the Charter Review Commission. Before her election, she was a member of the Parks & Recreation Commission, Recreation Task Force, and Field of Dreams initiative.

Council President Jessica Brandt praised Tulley’s leadership in a press release.

“Jan Tulley has been an invaluable member of the Macedonia City Council for over two decades,” Brandt said. “She cares deeply about this city and its residents and has provided leadership that helped mold it into the wonderful community it is today. Her presence will be missed, but I hope we can carry on her legacy of wisdom and service in a way that will make her proud.”

Tulley is a retired senior project manager for AT&T. She and her husband, Greg, have three children: Meredith, Gregory, and Patrick.
