Longwood Manor Status Report For April 2023

“…HIS YOGURT THEORY IS WELL FOUNDED”

Colonel William Frew Long, first Mayor of Macedonia and owner of Longwood Manor and its 360 acre farm, lived to the age of 103.

The Colonel attributed his longevity to… yogurt.

On January 30, 1973, an article appeared in the Akron Beacon Journal entitled, “At 92, His Yogurt Theory is Well Founded”. Colonel Long was interviewed by Charles Lally, who learned the Colonel’s secrets for long life: hard work, and consuming yogurt at every meal.

His yogurt routine started in the early 1930s on advice from a doctor when Colonel Long was suffering some intestinal issues. The problems disappeared and the Colonel began having yogurt from then on.

Colonel Long would make the yogurt at home. Utensils included a double boiler, yogurt incubator, thermometer, and mason jars for storage.

Ingredients included one gallon of whole milk, powdered milk, and dried Bulgarian yogurt culture.

After preparation the yogurt would be stored in his refrigerator in the mason jars. It had the consistency of custard and a tart tangy flavor.

When you visit Longwood Manor, you’ll see the yogurt maker, thermometer, and the Colonel’s recipe in the kitchen. The Akron Beacon Journal article is also on display for you to read in its entirety.

Longwood Manor Open House tours will resume on Sunday, April 30th, 2023, from 1pm until 4pm. We look forward to your visits.
