Nordonia Hills — The Nordonia Hills American Legion Post 801 recognized six outstanding Nordonia High School students at a special presentation celebrating their success in the 2025 Americanism and Government Test. The event, held on March 9th at the high school, honored students who demonstrated a strong understanding of U.S. government, history, and civic responsibility.
The award recipients included Brady McDonald, Avleen Sahota, Cecilia Dome, Maxwell Washington, and two others who were unable to attend — Molly Anderson and Kayden Varian.
Representatives from American Legion Post 801 — including Commander Jim Krasnicki, 1st Vice Commander Randy Coleman, and Adjutant Rick Devine — presented certificates and monetary awards to the students. The presentation emphasized the importance of civic education and encouraged students to stay engaged in their communities.
Principal Jessica Archer and Associate Principals Anthony Buckler and Shannon Conley, along with Dean of Students Jeff Fox, attended the ceremony to celebrate the students’ achievements.
A special highlight of the event was the recognition of Maxwell Washington, who earned the top district award and was selected for an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., sponsored by the American Legion Department of Ohio. During the trip, Washington toured national landmarks and met with other high-achieving students from across the state.
In a video message shared after the event, Maxwell described the experience as “eye-opening and inspiring,” adding that it gave him “a deeper appreciation for how our government works and the people who serve our country.”
1st Vice Commander Randy Coleman expressed pride in the students, saying the Americanism and Government program “builds awareness and respect for our nation’s democratic principles while encouraging young people to take an active interest in public service.”
The annual test, administered by the American Legion, challenges students across Ohio on topics such as the U.S. Constitution, the branches of government, and current events. Winners are chosen based on their performance and their demonstrated interest in civic engagement.
Events like this underscore the strong partnership between local organizations and schools, reminding the community that leadership and patriotism begin at the local level.
