Knights’ perfect 5-0 start puts them in prime playoff position
Nordonia football has positioned itself as a top contender in Division II, sitting at No. 2 in Region 5 with an 11.75 rating following the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s first official computer ratings release Tuesday.
The Knights football team’s undefeated record through five games has them trailing only Uniontown Lake (5-0, 13.5 rating) in the regional standings. Nordonia holds a comfortable margin over third-place Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit (5-0, 10.1784).
Several other area football teams secured strong positions in the initial rankings. In Division II Region 5, Hudson (4-1) and Twinsburg (4-1) are tied for fifth place with 9.1 ratings, while Garfield Heights sits eighth at 7.102.
The top 12 football teams in each region will qualify for the playoffs, with the top four seeds receiving first-round byes. Based on current standings, Nordonia would earn a bye through the first round if the season ended today.
The OHSAA will release updated ratings each Tuesday through the final report October 26. The 708 schools competing in 11-man football are divided into seven divisions, with approximately 106 schools in Divisions II through VII.
Football playoff action begins October 31 with first-round games hosted by higher seeds. The postseason continues through regional quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, leading to state championships December 4-6 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
Nordonia’s strong football season puts the Knights in position to make their first significant playoff run in recent years. The team will look to maintain its perfect record and solidify its playoff positioning in the coming weeks.
