Monthly Challenges

For Grades K-5 – Monthly challenges will be located in children’s area. Complete the challenge for a chance to win a small prize.

For October, complete the Halloween friends dot-to-dot.

Writers’ Guild of Nordonia Hills

Writers wanted! New writers and old hands welcome: fiction, nonfiction, and everything in between. Have your work critiqued and give feedback to others in a fun and friendly environment. Please bring a sample of your work to share. Light snacks provided. Meets the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 16.

Basic Computer Class Series

Free hands-on computer classes! The Basic Computer Series is designed for anyone new to computers or has never had formal training. In this series you will learn how to use the mouse; keyboard; Windows 10 Operating System; save and organize files and folders; also get an introduction to the Internet. Registration is required and available three weeks prior to the start of the first class.

Nordonia Hills Game Time

Join our regular gaming “meet-up” each month for patrons who enjoy board games, cards, chess, role-playing, war games, and collectible card games. The next meet-up will be on Saturday, October 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join fellow local players – Sharpen your intellect – Enjoy the social aspects of games. Refreshments are served. No registration is necessary.

Messy Monday

Join us for some messy fun, one Monday a month at 6 p.m. Remember to wear some old clothes, you may get messy. We will do pumpkin painting for Halloween on Monday, October 21 at 6 p.m. Please register by calling 330-467-8595 as space is limited.

Dungeons and Dragons

We are gathering Monday, October 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Join our quest at your own peril! For more information, please ask Mistress Sue.

25th Anniversary of ‘The Shawshank Redemption’

Author and Largely Literary co-founder Mark Dawidziak presents a program based on his upcoming book “The Shawshank Redemption Revealed,” which will be published in September, the 25th anniversary of director Frank Darabont’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s novella. Filmed in Ohio and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, “The Shawshank Redemption” has risen in popularity since its release in 1994, reaching No. 1 on IMDB’s list of most-loved movies. Dawidziak conducted more than 70 interviews for the book, talking to King, Darabont, Robbins and Freeman, as well as extras, supporting players and behind-the-scenes talent. Tuesday, October 22, 6:30 p.m.

Mystery Book Discussion

The Mystery Book Lovers discussion group is an informal group of adult mystery readers. Our next discussion will be on a ‘readers’ choice’ of an Ann Rule book on Wednesday, October 23 at 6:30 p.m.

Story Times

Baby Time

Thursdays, October 24-November 21, 10:15 a.m.

Baby Time features books, bounces, songs, and bubbles followed by a playtime. For children 24 months and under.

Toddler and Preschool Story Time

Thursdays, October 24-November 21, 11:30 a.m.

Story time features stories, rhymes, music, sometimes flannels, and bubbles followed by a playtime, for children ages 2-5 with two-year-olds accompanied by a parent, or caregiver.

Spooky Storytelling for Adults – Haunted stories with the WRAPPS storytellers

Halloween is a great time for storytelling, with tales of haunted houses and ghosts and ghoulies or stories of the macabre with twists and turns and unexpected endings. Come and listen to the WRAPPS storytellers weave their traditional tales or personal encounters of creatures from beyond the grave. Not recommended for Children under 8. Thursday, October 24, 6:30 p.m.

20th Anniversary String Trio Concert

This year the Nordonia Hills Branch Library celebrates 20 years of service to our community in our current building. Please join us for a special after-hours celebration, featuring a concert performed by Amy Cave, Assistant Concertmaster, Caleb Cox, Principal Viola, and Erica Snowden-Rodriguez, Principal Cello, from the Akron Symphony Orchestra. The concert will follow a brief history of library service in Nordonia Hills, presented by the Palmer House Historical Society. Refreshments will be served. Please register for this one-of-a-kind event, as space will be limited. All ages welcome. Friday, October 25, 7 p.m.

Family Night

Family of all ages join together for some great crafts. One Monday a month at 6 p.m. On Monday, October 28 we are creating scary button spiders.

Adult Coloring Night

Bring your own coloring book or choose from provided coloring pages and spend the evening relaxing and coloring with new friends. Tuesday, October 29, 6 p.m.

Travel Talk: Botswana, African Ecosystem Preserve

Join us for a fascinating travel talk on Botswana! Located in southern, central Africa, Botswana is home to the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, the only inland delta in the world. It is leading the way in conservation efforts with extensive national parks and game preserves. It is also friendly to tourism and highly affordable, a great destination for safari experiences. Tuesday, October 29, 6:30 p.m.

Crafters’ Corner

Join your fellow craft enthusiasts for daylong fun. Bring your own supplies. All crafts welcome. Lots of table space to spread out. Refreshments served. Come for an hour or the entire day. Saturday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Holiday Toy Drive

November 4 through December 7. In partnership with The Emergency Assistance Center of Northfield, the Library is hosting a holiday toy drive. Brand new toys still in the original packaging and gifts for teenagers (such as spirit wear, socks, lotion, etc.) are requested. Drop off donations in the Library lobby.

Travel Talk: Paris Sans Air Conditioning!

Kelly spent the summer of 2018 realizing a lifelong dream of living in Paris. Experiencing Bastille Day celebrations, France winning the Word Cup and watching the final day of the Tour de France bicycle race were exciting events in a hot, hot summer across the pond. Kelly will share stories and photos of the City of Light in a fascinating travel talk. Wednesday, November 6, 6:30 p.m.

Craft Beer and Brewing with R. Shea

Ron Shea of R Shea Brewing Co. in the Cuyahoga Valley will explain the process (and science) behind brewing craft beer. Learn the difference between a blonde, an IPA and a stout, and what goes into creating each unique brew. Ron will also share tips for better home brewing. You won’t want to miss this tasty talk. No alcohol will be served at this program. Thursday, November 7, 6:30 p.m.

Nordonia Hills Trivia Night

Test your knowledge in our trivia night! Teams of up to six admitted. Smaller groups are welcome, and may be combined into larger teams. Pizza and refreshments will be served and prizes awarded for the winning teams! Registration is strongly suggested, as only ten teams of six will be admitted. Friday, November 8, 7-9 p.m.

Teens Do Something

Need volunteer hours? Join us Saturday, November 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Some of the projects we’ll be doing are making library decorations, cleaning shelves, and making toys for Akron Children’s Hospital. Contact Miss Sue with any questions.

Monday Casual Reads

Join us the second Monday of each month for book discussions, fun, and sharing with fellow light reading lovers. We will discuss your choice of book by Jenny Colgan. Monday, November 11 at 2 p.m.

Stitch Clique

Grab your crocheting/knitting needles and yarn and stitch the evening away. Join us the second Tuesday of each month for crocheting/knitting tips, friendship, advice and more. Refreshments will be served. Tuesday, November 12, 6-8 p.m.

Paws for Reading

Read a book to Edmund, a certified therapy dog. Bring a book or read one of ours! This is a great way for children to practice their literacy skills and gain more confidence in reading aloud. Children of all ages are welcome. Tuesday, November 12 at 6:30 p.m.

After School Program

Grades K-5 can join us one Wednesday of the month after school at 4 pm for some fun activities. On Wednesday, November 13 at 4 p.m. build a tower from cups and craft sticks.

Socrates Café

Interested in candid, thought-provoking conversation? Join your fellow patrons at the Socrates Café, an informal adult discussion that takes place each month here at the library. The Cafe opens on Wednesday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m. 16 & over, please.

Coffee & Conversation Book Discussion

Join us for some great conversation with your fellow Nordonia Hills readers! Our next discussion is Thursday, November 14 at 2 p.m. to discuss Born a Crime by Trevor Noah.
