Knights Dominate Three-Set Match to Earn First State Berth in Program History

The Nordonia Knights boys volleyball team captured their first Division II regional championship with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Berkshire at Berkshire High School in Burton on May 24.

The top-seeded Knights controlled the match from start to finish, winning 25-14, 25-18, and 25-17 to advance to the state semifinals for the first time in program history.
The Knights used their offensive weapons effectively throughout the match, with junior outside hitter EJ Sopata leading the attack. The Knights ended the contest on a 10-2 run for the regional title.

Sopata has been Nordonia’s offensive leader all season, averaging 5.9 kills per match. Sophomore libero Cameron Anquillaire fueled a crucial run in the third set from the service line, while junior setter Zac Fernandez contributed a key solo block that gave momentum back to Nordonia in the decisive third set. The Knights’ balanced attack and strong defense proved too much for Berkshire, which was making its first regional final appearance in program history.

Nordonia (19-6) has won 13 of their last 15 matches heading into the state semifinals. The Knights have proven themselves against tough competition throughout the season, including victories over Jackson, St. Ignatius, Firestone and St. Edward.
Next Up: Nordonia advances to the state semifinals on May 30 at Wittenberg and will face Mount Vernon at 8 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to the Division II state championship.

The other state semifinal will feature the winner of the Mount Vernon vs. St. Charles regional final.
