Historic program heads to first-ever state semifinals Thursday
The Nordonia High School boys volleyball team will receive a police and fire escort out of town Thursday as they head to their first-ever state tournament appearance.
The Knights made program history May 24 by capturing their first Division II regional championship with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Berkshire. The top-seeded Knights controlled the match from start to finish, winning 25-14, 25-18, and 25-17 to punch their ticket to the state semifinals.
Senior outside hitter EJ Sopata led the offensive attack in the regional final, continuing his stellar season where he’s averaged 5.9 kills per match. Junior Cameron Anquillaire fueled a crucial run in the third set from the service line, while senior setter Zac Fernandez contributed a key solo block that gave momentum back to Nordonia in the decisive third set.
The team will depart from the high school between 3:30-4:00 PM Thursday following practice. The escort route will take the Knights north on South Bedford Road to Route 82, then left into Macedonia Commons toward the Interstate 271 South entrance ramp.
Athletic Director Rob Eckenrode encouraged teachers, staff, students and community members to gather in the Macedonia Commons parking lots to cheer on the team as they pass through.
Nordonia (19-6) has won 13 of their last 15 matches heading into the state semifinals. The Knights face Mount Vernon at 8 p.m. May 30 at Wittenberg University, with the winner advancing to the Division II state championship.
