Northfield Center Expansion

Michigan based Meijer Superstore looking to expand to Northfield Center.

By Victor Milani,

Meijer Superstore is looking for a change of zoning approval to build a 190,000 square foot facility on 20 acres, north of the Spitzer Chevy dealership. It would be built on Rt. 82, facing Rt.8 on land currently owned by Spitzer Management. The land, which is currently zoned for residential usage, would need a change of zoning for the project to be built. If the zoning change were approved by the 5 member Northfield Center zoning commission,. Meijer would begin construction late next year according to Meijer officials. A gas station and convenient store would also be built, west of the Spitzer property.

Trustee Paul Buescher expects some residents, whose property runs along the proposed Meijer build out, to have questions and concerns. Beechwood Dr. runs along the western edge of the project, and noise, lighting and water run off issues are preliminary issues they would like addressed. A public meeting will be held Dec.9 at 7 PM at the Northfield Elementary cafeteria for the public to ask questions and voice their views. The Zoning Commission won’t meet until January 11th at the earliest to vote on the zoning change proposal.

The Meijer chain currently has 223 stores in six states. They are looking to expand into Ohio in Northfield Center and Stow. They have expansion discussion with officials in Avon Lake and Bainbridge, where they would like to build on the old Geauga Lake Amusement Park parking lot.

The zoning change they are looking for approval on is from R-1 Residential, to C-1 -Commercial.
