Carol Teresa (Znidarsic) Bernath
October 3, 1942 – December 18, 2023
Carol Teresa (Znidarsic) Bernath, age 81, passed away in Maryville, Tennessee on December 18, 2023.
Carol grew up in Richmond Heights, Ohio and attended Euclid High School. Animals were a treasured part of Carol’s childhood, notably her dog Bonnie who was known to wait in line for trips down the playground slide. Carol and her sister Joanne sold vegetables at the roadside in front of their home and spent many enjoyable summers at the local YMCA camp.
After graduating from Ohio University, Carol worked as a dietician and then managed Stouffer’s Top of the Flame restaurant in Detroit, Michigan. From the Kent State tragedy to Nixon’s inauguration, Carol had a Gumpian proclivity for being at the scene of major national events in the ‘60s and ‘70s. She also appreciated camping trips and international travel, visiting family in Germany and skiing the Swiss Alps.
Later, Carol began a career in education as a home economics teacher in Maple Heights and met her husband, Donn, a fellow teacher. Donn and Carol raised their daughter Amy in Sagamore Hills, where Carol enjoyed gardening, cooking for family and friends, and walking the nearby towpath trails.
Family and friends knew Carol for her kind nature and calm presence, valuing both her quiet wisdom and thoughtful counsel. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Carol is survived by her daughter Amy (Ian Jobe); granddaughters Angela and Selene; sister Joanne Roberts; six nieces and nephews, including Julie Earnest who cared for Carol at the end of her life; and eleven great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Angela and Anthony Znidarsic.
The family will hold a private service to remember Carol’s life. Memorial gifts may be given to the United Methodist Church of Macedonia or to Haven of Rest Ministries in Akron, Ohio.
