Obituary: Donald G. Humpal

Donald G. Humpal, 94, passed away December 29, 2021.  Born February 20, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18 on June 20, 1945, and completed basic training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas.  He was qualified for Rifleman, the sharp-shooter that he was, then shipped overseas to Italy as one of the occupational troops.  He served two years and was honorably discharged on February 11, 1947, when the war was over; decorated with WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal.  After returning home, he began building homes with his father, George, until his father’s passing, then continued with his brother, Richard, forming DonRich Builders.  He ventured out on his own and became known as “Donald Humpal, Home Builder and Contractor”, constructing new custom, well-built homes, as well as remodeling many others, for over 60 years.  There was nothing he couldn’t fix or create!  He lived by the motto, “The impossible just takes a little longer.”  He enjoyed many past times, especially hunting and fishing – taking yearly trips to Rice Lake in Ontario, Canada for many years, a tradition started by his own father.  He was a very proud man who had a strong sense of dignity – even at the end of his 94 years here on Earth.  He was, and still will be, so well loved. Donald was the beloved husband for 60 years of the late Florence (nee Huber); Loving father of Donna Gilles (Paul); Karin Underwood (Chris); Sandra Phillips (David) and Michael (Lesley); Cherished grandfather of Matthew Gilles, Daniel Gilles, Natalie Gilles, Anna Underwood, Christopher Underwood, Joshua Phillips (Jackie), Tyler Phillips (Sara), Donald (fiancé-Stephanie), Michael Jr. (Emily), Zachary (Allie), Samantha, Sebastion, Zoey and Michaela; Dear great-grandfather of Arya Phillips, Averie Phillips, Cressida Phillips, and Madelyn Humpal; Favorite uncle and friend to many.  Donald is predeceased by his parents, George and Eleanor (nee Chaloupka), and siblings Lois Gandee (Bill) and Richard (Helen). Family suggests memorial contributions be made to:  Humane Society of Summit County, 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, OH  44087.
